Academic Support Services
English Learners
EL service in our elementary schools is a combination of co-teaching, push-in and pull-out service with small groups and newcomer instruction. EL teacher schedules are coordinated with the classroom teacher and building master schedule so that students do not miss important instructional time in the classroom.
Students who are eligible for EL services are assigned an EL Level of 1 through 5 and/or newcomer status based on a language assessment. EL teachers provide supplemental English Language Development instruction (that does not replace core instruction) for all students at levels 1-5.
Students at all EL levels receive small group services that are aligned to core instruction. Student support time based on level:
- Newcomers receive intensive language support in addition to small group services in the amount of 125-150 minutes per week.
- Levels 1 & 2 receive a minimum of 150-200 minutes per week of EL support
- Levels 3 & 4 receive a minimum of 90-120 minutes per week of EL support
- Level 5receive a minimum of 60-90 minutes per week of EL support
You can learn more about EL by visiting the English Learners page on the District website.
Special Education
Students in special education both have a disability and are in need of specialized instruction. A comprehensive evaluation, conducted by a team from the school, evaluates and identifies students. For every student who needs special education services, the team develops a special document called an Individualized Education Program (IEP). The IEP outlines the unique needs of the student and the specialized goals and objectives that will help the student make educational progress. Parents/guardians are a critical partner in every phase of identifying a student for special education and in establishing the IEP. Learn more by visiting the District's Special Education web page.
